A project to provide a series of sustainable live/work dwellings in Lower Maescoed, deep within the Herefordshire countryside. Having stood vacant for 10 years, in a former life, the site played host to a vibrant collection of piggeries, with extensive asbestos clad portal sheds occupying much of the site confines.
Negotiations with the Local Planning Authority to convert the existing buildings under Class Q had proved unsuccessful, and as a result the alternative approach to re-imagine the site in a more considered and thoughtful manner was successfully tabled, and granted approval at committee.
The design approach was centred around an interpretation of contemporary rural vernacular, with the massing on the site based around the traditional farm courtyard typology. Access and communal shared spaces were included to promote inclusivity and ensure a sense of community spirit, with amenity space and connection to the natural surrounding prioritised over development density.
The collection of dwellings include 2, 3 & 4 bedroom units, each with a dedicated workshop space designed to be accessible to local families and residents on every step of the housing ladder, whilst also promoting a prosperous rural economy through home working.
The simple material palette of local Stone, Brick, Timber and Standing Seam metal provide reference to the typical utilitarian nature of the former farm, whilst significantly improving the visual setting of the area.
