Faced with inadequate space to fully realise the potential of their creative students, Balcarras School were keen to update the existing ad-hoc facilities through the addition of a dedicated tailor made extended facility.

The Music School represents an exciting addition to the institution, that Ofsted already recognise as an outstanding school with inspirational teaching. The design approach was to prioritise a simplicity in form, whilst integrating subtle details to accentuate the buildings’ siting as the gateway building onto campus. The flat roofed extension above the existing ground floor was designed to deliver a generous internal arrangement of space, facilitating a dual function for both teaching and recital. The verticality of the ‘rhythmic’ façade references musical pattern and that of the daily cycle, casting varied shadows throughout the school day.

Along with the main classroom space, new soundproofed rehearsal rooms, a staff office, Music Technology lab & replacement Tuck shop were added as part of the works. Use of off-site manufacture was used during the construction process where possible to minimise disruption during the school calendar.
Headmaster at the time of the design development, Chris Healy, explained how ‘The arts are a vital part of our curriculum, and we are excited to be investing in new facilities for the enjoyment of, and participation with music in all its forms. It will be a pleasure knowing this project shall benefit future generations, embodying the collective commitment to excellence shared between school, pupils, parents and staff’.
The Music School was jointly opened by benefactor Julian Dunkerton who part funded the works & BBC Radio Personality Jo Whiley.
