This design proposal seeks to create a distinctive yet subservient addition to an established family home, celebrating understated contemporary design whilst complimenting the existing built form. The proposed works introduce a new Kitchen, Dining & Living Room at the Eastern end of the residence, remaining largely invisible from the road and neighbouring properties thanks to the contoured nature of the site and established trees and greenery that flank the site boundaries.

Careful consideration has been given to the external appearance, proportion and materiality of the proposed development. It has been an important aspect to make a strong reference to the historic material palette and patina of the surrounding neighbourhood.

The principle elevational composition will be weathered Cotswold Stone cladding matching the existing house, and the majority of properties in the surrounding area. Metal framed Crittal style doors and windows shall punctuate the façades, set within traditional stone mullion & jamb surrounds, further enhancing its relationship to the visual characteristics seen on the existing residence and surrounding area.

The roof above is designed to match both the existing roof pitch and materiality, with a crisp contemporary adaptation introduced over the main living space, in the form of a flat glazed rooflight along the apex, hidden behind the feature stone gables to the north & south elevations.

Combined, the proposed materiality and built forms directly compliment aspects of both the familiar traditional vernacular of the area and the more recent ‘prairie house’ vernacular of the existing residence.

The extension is designed as a low impact, energy efficient addition with a plan arranged to maximise light and views within the building and out to the garden, without introducing a proportion of glazing that could risk appearing alien to the existing residence.

The scheme has been submitted for detailed planning, awaiting outcome in due course.
