Oliver worked with the clients to develop proposals to transform an existing outmoded residence with a spectacular outlook over a serene Cornish creek, complete with its own quay & mooring at the water’s edge.

The project started life as a relatively straightforward remodeling and extension scheme, with the client wishing to make better use of the internal layout, provide additional bedroom accommodation for the whole family to utilise, whilst ensuring that the interaction with the natural landscape was enhanced. The brief also sought to provide a dedicated ‘boat room’ to allow for storage of kayaks, combined with an extension to the existing stone retaining wall along the water to provide parking provision with safer access to and from the narrow single track road running behind the home.

The project later evolved into a full replacement dwelling build on site owing partly to restricted access and unforeseen structural issues, whilst allowing for higher standards of thermal performance and airtightness. As a consequence it was also possible to integrate an internal connection to the newly formed boat room at the water’s edge. The building retained the form and material palette seen in the original residence in order to maintain the essence of the traditional whilst integrating the discrete benefits of modernisation. Timber, render and natural stone form the principle envelope, with crisp frameless glazed balustrading picking out external terraces.
