This scheme was for the creation of a replacement dwelling set within the fringes of a secluded Herefordshire woodland. Bought at auction by the client, the existing squatters cottage was charming though was completely run down after years of neglect. In its found state, the dwelling had no mains power or heating and was unfit for habitation, with even the plumbing having been stripped by looters.

As part of the detailed design process, an incredibly unique design was developed to maximise the magical setting, creating a residence truly befitting of the site. The dwelling is formed in an upside down arrangement, partially sunken into the banked earth at ground floor with principle access achieved via suspended walkway through the robust stone walls. The living spaces at first floor sit beneath a soaring gull-wing roof, angling views upwards and outwards across the site with extensive views to the woodland and pastures beyond. The building is entirely framed in Oak and incorporates substantial levels of insulation together with triple glazing and a highly airtight envelope to near Passivhaus standards.

The remnants of the original house have been utilised to form a standalone Plant Room housing a woodchip boiler that provides the heating and hot water to the residence, along with the water supply, capped off from a nearby natural spring.

The ambitious clients oversaw the works as project managers, effectively delivering the project as a self build, with incredible results. Looking forward to revisiting in the coming months to see the completed landscaping works.
